{"id":268,"date":"2023-02-08T11:15:09","date_gmt":"2023-02-08T11:15:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/verge.hi.is\/?p=268"},"modified":"2023-02-08T11:17:02","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T11:17:02","slug":"new-technology-contributes-towards-lower-ghg-emission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/verge.hi.is\/?p=268","title":{"rendered":"New technology contributes towards lower GHG emission"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n[et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.19.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;23px|||||&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.19.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.19.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.19.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<p>The University of Iceland and<a href=\"https:\/\/english.hi.is\/news\/reducing_the_worlds_carbon_footprint_with_new_method_for_manufacturing_fertilizer\"><span>\u00a0<\/span>Atmonia ehf<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>are collaborating with five other highly respected institutes and companies, RWTH Aachen University, VITO, MS Balti, TEGA and Ecovibes on VERGE, a Horizon Europe project that started the 1 November.<\/p>\n<p>The VERGE project is part of the EU\u2019s Horizon Europe programme, that supports research dealing with Europe&#8217;s greatest current challenges\u00a0e.g. energy and climate changes.\u00a0The main objective of the VERGE project is to develop a proof-of-concept N2 electrolyser to produce liquid ammonia for fuel and fertiliser, designed for direct coupling to sustainable energy sources.<\/p>\n<p>The technology developed within the VERGE project will be the first of its\u00a0kind, electrochemical process for sustainable anhydrous ammonia production from renewable electricity.\u00a0The ability to produce sustainable ammonia directly from renewable electricity has high global significance as its current industrial production process (Haber-Bosch) is responsible for 1% annual anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Furthermore, the future of e-Fuel is strongly directed towards ammonia. In the field of maritime transport, up to 3% of annual anthropogenic GHG emissions can be avoided by moving from fossil fuels to ammonia as an energy carrier.\u00a0Through its contribution towards lower GHG emission, the VERGE technology will significantly contribute towards a faster transition to a net-zero greenhouse gas emissions EU economy by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/verge.hi.is\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Picture2.png&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.19.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221; title_text=&#8221;Picture2&#8243; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;][\/et_pb_image][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.19.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;][et_pb_column _builder_version=&#8221;4.19.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.19.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<p><em>The main objective of the VERGE project is to develop a proof-of-concept N2 electrolyser to produce liquid ammonia for fuel and fertiliser, designed for direct coupling to sustainable energy sources.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>An additional benefit of the VERGE technology is that it will fully utilise the production potential of renewable electricity infrastructure.
